Why do you need my mobile number to set up 2FA?

We need your mobile number to verify your identity and your association with the phone that you are using to authenticate via 2FA.

We also need your number in case you're unable to use the authenticator app. If this happens, you can request your code to be sent via SMS. For security reasons, we will only send it to the mobile number we have associated with your WriteUpp username/password.

Please note that if you request for a code to be sent via SMS, this will use a text credit each time a code is requested. For this reason, we would recommend that the Google Authenticator app (or the icloud Keychain if you are using macOS/iOS) is your first point of call for a 2FA code, and SMS is used as a backup.
