What happens if I lose my phone with 2FA activated?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) provides an added layer of security when logging in to WriteUpp and as the name suggests it uses two mechanisms (instead of one) to verify your identity. These are:

Username/password - like normal
A verification code generated by an authenticator app, usually on your mobile phone

If you lose your mobile phone you will be unable to login to WriteUpp unless you checked [Trust this device](https://help.writeupp.com/en/article/what-does-trust-this-device-mean-1w94bu7/) when you last logged in using 2FA.

If you haven't previously checked "Trust this device" and you have lost your phone you will need to contact your Site Administrator and ask them to Reset 2FA on your user login. Then, when you have found your phone or you have a replacement you will need to go through the 2FA set up process again. The article below explains how you do this:

How do I set up user-based two-factor authentication (2FA)?

As 2FA is a site wide setting, if a user loses their mobile phone and doesn't immediately have another one available in order to re-configure 2FA, you might need to deactivate 2FA for a brief time so they can log in.
