Connecting a Stripe reader to WriteUpp

Connecting your stripe reader to WriteUpp to take in-person payments couldn’t be easier. Before we begin, it is important to note that the integration only works with two types of reader:

BBPOS WisePOS E reader
Stripe Reader S700

Unfortunately, any other Stripe reader types are not compatible with the integration. You can purchase a reader from the Stripe website, following the links above.

You must also ensure that you are connected to Stripe Unified. If you are still on the Stripe Standard connection, then head to Integrations & Add Ons -> Stripe and click ‘Connect to Stripe Unified’. You can find the full steps for making the switch here.

Switching to a Stripe Unified account could save you 0.5% on transaction fees! Check out the Unified rates here.

If you are not yet connected to any Stripe account, then read this article to learn how to get started today.

Once you are set up with a Stripe Unified account and have your Stripe reader to hand, follow the steps below to get connected!

Head to Integrations & Add Ons and click the Configure button for Stripe

Only Site Administrators have access to Stripe on the ‘Integrations and Add ons’ screen. If you have the role of Privileged, Regular or Restricted user, then please speak to the Site Administrator about connecting a Stripe reader to WriteUpp.

Under the ‘In Person Payments’ section, you will see two buttons, one for registering and one for retrieving a reader. What you click on will depend on whether or not you have already registered your Stripe reader with your Stripe Unified account. If you have already registered the reader, then click on 'Retrieve a reader'. If you haven’t, then don’t worry, skip to the 'Registering a reader' section and we’ll show you how to register your reader from within WriteUpp!

Retrieving a reader:

When you click Retrieve a reader, a modal will open listing all of the readers that we can find connected to your Stripe Unified account. Simply select any reader(s) that you would like to pair to your WriteUpp site (you can pair as many readers as required).

Click Confirm and the reader(s) will be connected to your site. Once a reader is added, you can start using it to take payments.

Registering a reader:

If you click ‘Register a reader’, this will allow you to register a reader which is not yet associated with your Unified account. A modal will open asking you to input a registration code from your reader. To find this, turn on your reader, head to the main menu and open ‘Admin Settings’ and then click ‘Generate a code’. Enter this code into the modal in WriteUpp (NOTE: it will generate a 3 word code separated by dashes. Be sure to enter this code exactly as you see it on screen). Click ‘Confirm’.

Want to discover more about the reader you’re using, including how to access settings. Follow this link and select the reader you’re using to learn more.

The next screen will ask you to enter a name and select a location for the reader. Enter a name that allows you to identify this reader. For the location, you will need to select one that is already set up in your Unified Stripe account. To manage locations in Stripe, head to your account and follow the steps laid out here.

Once this is completed, press Save and the reader will be registered to your Stripe account and connected to WriteUpp.

IMPORTANT: Please ensure that you have finished the set up in your Stripe Unified account before you start taking payments, such as where these payments are going. If you are unsure about any of the set up in Stripe, then please check out their customer support page.

You are now ready to start taking in-person card payments!

Removing a reader

If you decide you no longer wish to use the stripe reader with WriteUpp, and you would like to remove the connection, then you have two options:

Head to Integrations & Add Ons and click the Configure button for Stripe

Under the ‘In Person Payments’ section, click on the Trashcan icon for the reader you would like to remove

You will see two options in the modal that appears. Choose ‘Remove’ to simply remove the link between the reader and WriteUpp. If you do this, the reader will be removed from WriteUpp, but it will still be registered in your Stripe account.

If you click ‘Remove and Delete’, it will remove the link from WriteUpp and also delete the reader from your Stripe account. Do this with care and only if you no longer wish to use the reader with your Stripe account!

If you remove all of the Stripe readers linked to your WriteUpp site, then you will no longer be able to take in-person payments via Stripe.
