Square fees

The fees for taking a payment through WriteUpp via Square are applied on a per transaction basis and are:

In person card payments - 1.75%
Online payments - 1.4% + 25p for transactions with UK cards and 2.5% + 25p for transactions with non-UK cards

These equate to the standard Square rates for processing transactions.

There's no long term contract, and other than purchasing a Square Terminal which is required for in person payments, there are no other fees to be paid.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Square’s new international transaction fee across Canada, the UK, Spain, France, and Ireland. This fee will apply in addition to processing fees when a merchant accepts an internationally issued credit or debit card. Card processing fees when accepting domestic credit and debit cards are not changing with this update.

This change has taken effect for new merchants in Canada, the UK, Spain, France, and Ireland.
It will apply to existing merchants in the UK, Spain, and France starting April 2, 2026, and in Ireland starting April 3, 2026.

There is a commercial partnership agreement in place between WriteUpp and Square. This will result in the standard transaction fee against each payment being shown in 2 lines, as the fee is split between Square and WriteUpp. If you have custom pricing arranged with Square, please do get in touch with our team here to discuss how your transactions through WriteUpp will be charged.

Square is only available to WriteUpp users based in the UK. For those of you who are not UK based, you will be able to set up Stripe which will cover both online and in person payments
