How Appointment Categories Display Across WriteUpp and Online Booking 2.0
Once you’ve created your Appointment Categories and assigned them to your appointment types, they’ll automatically be used throughout WriteUpp to organise and present your services more clearly.
This article explains where categories appear, how they’re ordered, and how appointment types are displayed within them.
Appointment Categories in WriteUpp
1. Appointment Modal
When you click on an appointment slot in the diary, the Type dropdown is now grouped by category.
You’ll see:
- Category headers (shown in a muted grey style)
- Appointment types listed beneath each category
- Categories displayed in the order you’ve set under Fields → Appointment Categories
- Appointment types within each category shown alphabetically

Uncategorised appointment types
Any appointment types not assigned to a category appear after all categories, in a separate uncategorised list, ordered alphabetically.
Inactive categories
Inactive or empty categories do not appear in the appointment modal.
2. Create → Appointment
When manually creating an appointment (Create → Appointment), the Type field follows the exact same structure and ordering as the appointment modal:
- Category headers
- Types inside each category are listed alphabetically
- Uncategorised types shown at the bottom
- No inactive categories are displayed
This keeps appointment selection consistent throughout the system.
Appointment Categories in Online Booking 2.0
If your site has at least one active category with at least one appointment type, Online Booking 2.0 will introduce a new step: Appointment Category.
3. Select Category Screen (Online Booking 2.0)
This screen appears before the usual Appointment Types screen and includes:
- A title and welcome text (matching your existing Online Booking 2.0 styling)
- A list of active appointment categories
- Categories are displayed in your chosen order from Settings → Fields
- Only categories that contain at least one appointment type are listed (empty categories are hidden)
The “All Categories” option
At the top of the list, clients will also see an 'All Categories' block showing every available appointment type on your site.
4. Appointment Types Screen (after selecting a category)
If a client selects a category:
- They’re taken to the standard Appointments page
- This page is filtered to show only the appointment types within that category
- Layout and styling match the existing Online Booking design
Ordering of appointment types in Online Booking
Within categories, appointment types follow this logic:
- Types with an order number appear first
- If two types share the same number, they sort alphabetically
- Types without an order number appear below the ordered ones, sorted alphabetically
This gives you full control over how your services appear to clients.
5. If a site has no categories
If no categories exist, there isn't an ‘Appointment Categories’ page in Online Booking 2.0 - clients go straight to the appointment types list.
