There are one or two known issues associated with using 123-reg, but thankfully they have produced a very useful support article (if you are experiencing problems authenticating), which you can read here. 

If your provider is not listed, please contact your email provider. As much as we'd like to help, we can't provide support for your email service.

Please be aware that email providers are not all made equal. Many hosting providers (like 123-reg, Fasthosts & GoDaddy) offer email as an afterthought and don't have the same infrastructure, resilience, technical support and security as the services provided by Apple, Google and Microsoft. If you are having problems using SMTP with one of the less popular providers, we would recommend using a service like Google Apps.
