Importing forms to WriteUpp
If you've got forms that you regularly use, either PDF, paper based or handwritten, you can import these to your account as WriteUpp forms using our Form Import tool.
What does it do?
The form import tool takes a form created externally and converts it into the WriteUpp form format.
What file formats can be used?
PDF and image files can be uploaded for import.
If you have a PDF copy of a form you'd like to use, you can upload it straight into the upload tool.
If you've got an image file, like a .png or a .jpeg of a form, you can also upload it straight into the tool.
If you have a paper form that you'd like to import, simply take a picture of it and upload the image!
If you've got a form in something like a Word document, you can either export it from Word as a PDF document, or take a picture of it.
How does it work?
The upload tool uses AI to analyse an imported form and then rebuilds it within WriteUpp as a form template.
It's important to note that the tool will not recreate forms exactly, in their current format. It takes the fields contained within the form and uses the fields and layouts within the WriteUpp form builder and creates the best possible version.
It's not perfect but if it doesn't create your form as you would like it to look, it provides a starting point for changes, rather than building a form from scratch.
How is a form uploaded?
To upload a form to WriteUpp:
- Open the main menu and under Settings & Tools, select Tools then Form import.
- Either drag and drop your files into the area shown on screen or use the Upload Files button to choose them from your device.
- As your files are uploaded and processed, you'll see the status displayed on screen:

- Once the form is uploaded and ready, you'll see the status as Processed and a pencil icon at the end of the row:

- Once the form has been processed, it will be saved to your assessment collection but not yet published for use. Click on the pencil icon to be taken to the form as it has been created in the WriteUpp form builder.
- The form name is set by default as the file name, and can be edited in the form builder. The form content is then listed below in the layouts and fields available within WriteUpp. Clicking on Preview at the top of the screen will allow you to preview the form as it will appear when being used, and Build will allow it to be edited. The import will use Smart Fields as much as possible when creating your forms.
- If the layout needs to be adjusted, you can use the Split View/Full Width button to swap between the two:

- If fields need changed to a different type eg from Text to Paragraph, you can use the Convert button to choose a different field:

- Whole sections can be moved by clicking and dragging on the Move button:

- Individual fields can be moved by clicking and dragging this icon:

- If any fields are missing, you can also add them to your form by using the Add New Fieldbutton at the bottom of any section.
- Finally, once you are happy with your form, make sure to click on Publish and Exit to save any changes and to make the form available to users within your account.
This import process will take your form and create the best possible version of it with WriteUpp. We can't guarantee an exact match, or that it will pick up all of the content of your imported file. The end result will depend on the layout and content of your form and its complexity. Once your form has processed, please use the tools available to you to customise or complete it.
For longer, more complex forms you might want to consider completing these in their original format outside of WriteUpp and uploading as an attachment to the client summary.
